Sedation Dentistry

Sedation dentistry refers to the use of sedation during dental treatment. Sedation is most commonly used during extensive procedures, for patients with dental phobia or for patients who find it difficult to sit still. There are different types of sedation, including nitrous oxide ("laughing gas") and oral sedatives.

Nitrous Oxide

Nitrous oxide, more commonly known as laughing gas, is often used as a conscious sedative during a dental visit. The gas is administered with a mixture of oxygen and has a calming effect that helps phobic or anxious patients relax during their dental treatment. Because it is a mild sedative, patients are still conscious and can talk to their dentist during their visit. After treatment, the nitrous is turned off and oxygen is administered for five to 10 minutes to help flush any remaining gas. The effects wear off almost immediately. Nitrous oxide rarely has side effects, although some patients may experience minor nausea and constipation. Your doctor will provide you with pre-and post-sedation instructions.

Oral Sedation

Advances in medication have allowed dentists to offer oral sedatives that safely produce a deep state of relaxation and make it possible for you to have a dental procedure without feeling anything. If you have very sensitive teeth, a fear of needles, have difficulty with your gag reflex, fear pain and discomfort or you just feel a general anxiety of the idea of visiting the dentist, then oral sedation may be right for you. Prior to your treatment, please inform us of any medications you are taking and medical problems you have, so we can determine what oral sedative is best suitable for you. Our doctors have received advanced sedation training through the Dental Organization for Conscious Sedation.

IV Sedation

Many people feel anxious or nervous about visiting the dentist. If you are one of those people, our dentists may be able to help. We offer IV sedation in Warsaw, Indiana to help lower your anxiety while in our office.

IV sedation involves administering sedative medications directly into your bloodstream. The effects of this method happen very quickly and you feel relaxed and may even fall asleep. When you wake up, you will not be able to recall the sights, smells, or sound of the procedure. You will remain conscious throughout the treatment and can still communicate with your dentist and dental team if necessary. IV sedation is very safe, and you will be monitored throughout your appointment with state of the art equipment.
